Review:
Pianist Antonio Chen Guang is blurbed by Vladimir Ashkenazy on this Steinway & Sons release, and perhaps he is developing a bit of the great's genius. He's charismatic, powerful, and intelligent in planning on a large scale. Guang takes on some difficult works on this debut recording from Steinway Hall in New York. The Brahms Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24, dedicated to Clara Schumann, is challenging both technically and interpretively, with a subtle ebb and flow married to some pianistic fireworks. Guang handles these with aplomb, providing the requisite monumental conclusion in the big fugue with its climax-building episodes. Even better is the Berg Piano Sonata in B minor, Op. 1, an underplayed work that is, in a way, another set of variations that leads via various threads to the tonic key at the end. this is a promising release from a pianist who is likely another good pick from Steinway.
