Biography
Zlata Bulycheva is a mezzo-soprano on the soloist roster of the Kirov Opera (or Mariinsky Theater) company, one of the leading ensembles in Russia. She studied as an undergraduate at the St. Petersburg Conservatory with Professor I.P. Levando, graduating in 1995. She also took graduate studies there, with Professor K.V. Izotova. While at the Conservatory, she was named a soloist member of the Music Theater of the conservatory. After further studies, at the Stuttgart Academy of Music in Germany, she returned to Russia and joined the Mariinsky company in 1996, the same year she won First Prize at the St. Petersburg International Vocal Competition for Young Opera Singers. She is also a prize-winner at the International Rimsky-Korsakov Vocal Competition of St. Petersburg (1998) and the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1999). She sings leading mezzo and alto roles in the standard repertory: the title role in Bizet's Carmen; Zibel in Gounod's Faust; Nicklausee in Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann; Erda in Wagner's Das Rheingold; Orpheus in Gluck's Orpheus and Eurydice; and Cherubino in Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. She has sung the solo alto parts in Mahler's Second and Third Symphonies. Her repertory in Russian opera includes Ratmir in Glinka's Ruslan y Lyudmila; Konchakova in Borodin's Prince Igor; Olga in Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin; the parts of Paulina and Milovzor in The Queen of Spades;Sonya and Princess Marya Bolkonskaya in Prokofiev's War and Peace; and Fata Morgana in Prokofiev's Love of Three Oranges. She has appeared on recordings of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov and Love of Three Oranges.
